Good morning/afternoon, my dear judges. I’m examinee No. 2. It’s my great honor to have this opportunity to talk about my teaching ideas. Today my topic is “My friends”. My presentation consists of the following aspects.
I Analysis of teaching materialsThis lesson is from PEP English book, the first semester of Grade 4, Unit 3 My friends. We will focus on Section A, Let’s talk. I want this material to teach students to introduce and describe their own friends.II Analysis of studentsThis lesson is designed for Grade-4 students who will have been learning English for one year. While some of them might speak some English, they will run into problems due to knowledge gaps and poor grasp of certain grammatical forms, so I will introduce the idea of descriptive words in this lesson. This is why I will design and practice activities to improve their speaking and listening skills.III Analysis of teaching aimsAccording to the English curriculum standard, teaching material and students, I set the following teaching aims:Knowledge aims:Students can get to know the main idea of the dialogue.Students should know what descriptive words are.Ability aims:Students can improve their basic and intensive listening skills.Students can utilize relevant descriptive words in their own English.Emotional aims:Students’ increase their personal interest in learning English.IV Analysis of teaching key points and difficult pointsKey points:The main idea of the text.Basic understanding of descriptive words.Difficult Points:Being aware of descriptive words in a text and for students to utilize them in their own English.V Analysis of teaching methods and learning methodsSpeaking of teaching methods, I’ll mainly use “task-based teaching method” and “communicative approach”, by which, I think, students can have a thorough understanding of the text. When it comes to learning method, students will be asked to do some teamwork and learn in a cooperative way, to give students a cohesive understanding of the content. For this reason, in this class, students will be divided into groups to finish the task.VII Analysis of teaching proceduresStep 1 Warming-up1. First, I’ll briefly greet students by asking simple and friendly questions.2. Then we’ll play a game. Two students will come to the front of the class and we will differentiate them using descriptive words; for example, “Alex has short hair, Luke has long hair”. We will do this for a few minutes until the students are relaxed and comfortable. After that, students will be invited to make guesses at what we will be studying this lesson.3. Finally, I will lead in the topic they are going to learn in the class, and further enhance their interest by pictures of people they can describe. The purpose of this stage of the lesson is to relax the students and make them feel like they are in a comfortable, inclusive and friendly learning environment.Step 2 Pre-listeningIn this part, I’ll guide students to have a preliminary understanding of the text.1. First, the students will look at a picture from the comic book with the text redacted. I will ask them what they think about the pictures- what do they think this text is about?2. The students will describe the picture collectively.3. The students will guess what is going on in the picture.By asking students to draw conclusions of main idea according to the given information, they will be actively involved in the class and their ability of reasoning can be improved. The purpose of this stage in the lesson is to further immerse the students in the subject matter and prepare them for listening to the text.Step 3 While-listeningIn this part, students need to listen to the text twice in order to grasp the structure and some detailed information.1. Basic comprehensiveFirst, I’ll ask students to listen to the text to check if their guesses about the picture were right or not. If not, they need to find out the right answer within the text. For this part, they will only be given one and a half minutes. After that, two students will be invited to share their ideas.Main idea: describing friend2. Intensive listeningI’ll then ask students to listen to the passage for the second time. This time, they are required to listen to it carefully to find out some details and then answer specific questions. They will have four minutes for this part.1) Name of the boy’s friend: His name is Zhang Peng. Here they can familiarize themselves with the sentence structure ‘his/her name is…’1) Three things about Zhang Peng? He is tall, Chinese, and strong. Here they can familiarize themselves with the sentence structure ‘he/she is…’The purpose of this stage of the lesson is to introduce these sentence structures and descriptive words, and ensure students understand the content of the text.Step 4 Post-listeningAfter the students are thoroughly familiar with the comic strip, I’ll design an activity based around descriptive words to help improve their understanding of this English tool.Students will be paired into groups of approximately three, dependent on the number of pupils, and each student will take turns as the speaker. The speaker will have one minute to introduce their two partners to each other, describing them using descriptive language following the sentence structures we have learned; ie “His name is Mike! He is tall and strong.”The students will be encouraged to use accurate descriptive words and their teammates with evaluate their progress. We will do this activity for around 8-10 minutes, changing groups around if necessary. This stage of the lesson is to evaluate how much the students have grasped the content of the lesson, and also test their understanding of these specific grammatical forms. A relaxed activity like this also creates a relaxed and enjoyable learning atmosphere for learning.Step 5 Summary and homeworkStudents will then be invited to review the content they have learned in this class, and we will go over the key points learned and touch briefly on the difficult points. For homework, the students should draw a short comic about their own friend(s) or family, using descriptive words and sentences that we discussed during the lesson. The purpose of this part of the lesson is to summarize what was learned, and ensure the students have details of their homework so that they can consolidate their knowledge.VIII Analysis of blackboard design
To help students have a clear understanding of the lesson content, I’ll design the blackboard shown above. This blackboard is suited for younger students, because pictures aid their learning and the sentences help them memorize important grammatical structures.
